status. Much of the area is tribal land, and negotiations are in progress for additional
government land to be ceded back to the First Nations peoples.

learning, with more than 12 satellite campuses providing education throughout the
Territory. Northern Studies is a unique element of the curriculum, covering the history,
sociology and ecology of the region and its circumpolar peoples. Distance learning
is essential, allowing institutions to provide courses to those without convenient
access to a college campus. Not all distance learning or distributed learning courses
