As a cardiovascular technologist,
you would assist physicians in diagnosing and treating heart trouble, including cardiac
arrest and disease.
Cardiovascular technology encompasses a broad category of work with three areas of
practice:
Cardiology technologists assist physicians in invasive procedures such as cardiac
catheterization, in which a small tube, or catheter, is wound through a patientís
blood vessel.
Those who assist physicians in the diagnosis of disorders affecting the circulation
are known as vascular technologists or vascular sonographers.
Technologists who use ultrasound to examine the heart chambers, valves, and vessels
are referred to as cardiac sonographers, or echocardiographers.
Training for any aspect of cardiovascular technology is required. Most employees
have pursued a two or four year program before being hired in this capacity.
