Programs
Ultrasound is used to "see"
inside the body. It is far less risky than X-ray, and is often used to detect such
things as soft tissue injury or the position of the fetus during pregnancy. The technique
involves bouncing actual sound waves off the object or area to be observed and then
recording how the sound returns. The returning sound can be used to create a picture
of the area under examination. Other uses of ultrasound--and these are also often
the career goals of ultrasound technologists--are explorations under the earth and
deep into the oceans.
