Louisiana Colleges, Universities, and
Schools
If you want to Higher Education
in a place where you'll be surrounded by the country's most authentic old time jazz
plus deep river blues and then have Mardi Gras as your spring break, Louisiana is
the place. The city of New Orleans is an around the clock party that lives up to
its impressive reputation. The state is also steeped in intrigue and history, from
the wild days of pirates Jean and Pierre LaFitte, through the arrival of the Arcadian
religious refugees (now known as Cajuns) and the chaotic turmoil of the American
Civil War. The French, Spanish, British, and confederate flags all flew over Louisiana
at one time or another and the state is filled with flavors from all of its different
eras. If you love the great outdoors, pursuing your education in Louisiana offers
you an opportunity to take advantage of hundreds of miles of waterways, beautiful
beaches and welcoming parks with acres of wilderness, hiking trails, and campsites.
The colleges and universities in Louisiana are a strong part of the state's proud
heritage and traditions and they attract students from all over. The state-run Office
of Student Assistance has numerous programs to help prospective students cover the
cost of education in Louisiana.
A good high school education, followed by a college degree, is essential for career
advancement these days. Competition for jobs is fierce and even most manual jobs
now require a certification providing skill and experience.
Jobs requiring an associate degree are projected to grow 32 percent over the 2000-10
period; jobs requiring a post-secondary vocational award should grow 24.1 percent
(U.S. Department of Labor). Today, college graduates earn an average of 98% more
income than non-college-graduates. And the gap is widening. (Source: U.S. Department
of Commerce). Bachelor's and master's degrees, combined with experience, provide
the best route to success.
History or geography students might be interested to know that Louisiana is the only
state in the union that does not have counties. Its political subdivisions are called
parishes. A 2002 census put the population at 4,482,646.
Louisiana has a fascinating history, but its future looks good too. Louisiana is
has made great strides in its K-12 education system in the last ten years and has
been nationally recognized for its accountability policies and improvements.
Post-secondary education in Louisiana also has a lot to be proud of. There are eight
universities located throughout the state, enrolling nearly 80,000 students of all
ages and backgrounds, and offering over 600 academic degree programs. In addition
to this, you can also choose from its excellent state university system, and a range
of technical community colleges and private institutions spread right across the
state.
Louisiana's rich and culturally diverse history makes it a place rich and diverse
in heritage and Cajun cuisine. Its equally diverse industries include petrochemicals,
shipping, tourism and entertainment.
